A Dog In Heat Getting Acupuncture

Okay, it is day 3 of An Uncomfortable January. An entire month of doing things that make me get outside of my comfort zone and grow a bit. Today's post is one that I could not have possible planned. I didn't have much choice in the matter. It just sort of unfolded in a completely ridiculous way.

What: taking a dog in heat to get acupuncture

Well, we have a dog. Her name is Minnie & she is a miniature Goldendoodle. She is a breeding dog, who just went into her first heat (yea, its already getting uncomfortable, I know). Weeks ago, I scheduled her vet appointment for today. Long before I knew anything about heat & doggy diapers. I had to drive Minnie to Dallas ( 2 hrs away ) for her to see a holistic vet for acupuncture and a chiropractic adjustment. So, I took a dog wearing a diaper to a holistic vet. Yeah. No, I am not one of those people. So, if I am not one of those people then why did I do it? Please, please keep reading so I can vindicate myself.

Why is it uncomfortable?

Umm... lots of reasons? A dog in heat or a dog getting acupuncture would be enough alone, but together...welcome to my day today. The thing that bothered me the most was the fact that I looked like a total yuppie to everyone else.

  • I had an expensive dog - yuppie alert- who was clearly not spayed. I was just waiting for someone to unleash fury on me about how there are so many animals in shelters & we don't need to breed any more.
  • My dog was wearing a diaper. Does it make it worse that it had polka dots? And it was a 2 hour drive with little children which meant every McDonalds along the way got a good view of this crazy lady, her two kids & the diaper clad dog.
  • Minnie was getting acupuncture. Acupuncture. I looked like an overly obsessed dog owner...which I am not.

The real story is that we were blessed with the dog for free. In return we allowed the breeder to have the breeding rights to a few litters. This breeder is amazing and takes very good care of her dogs. Since Minnie will be bred, the breeder pays for all the vet bills. Including semi-regular specialist visits. Like acupuncture.

Lets look at some pictures shall we?

Here is Minnie getting her back adjusted:

Ahh...now for the needles. This was my first experience with acupuncture. Pretty sure I am never having it done.

And lets finish off this holistic natural canine experience with some nice essential oils behind the ears.

essential oil

To top it off, the vet was from Brazil and had an incredibly soothing voice with a deep accent that made her sound very posh. And slightly hypnotic I might add. She might double as a yoga instructor, I'm not sure.

What I learned when I did it:

After being classified by the general public as a obsessive & yuppie pet owner, I realized that I totally judge people who are obsessed with their pets. I love my dogs, but no way are they allowed on furniture or share the same status as a human. So, I'll learn to be less judgemental. Thats a good lesson anyway.

Honestly though, it was an incredibly bizarre day. So very uncomfortable. I lugged two kids and a dog in heat around Dallas. People classified me as a yuppie and I can't blame them since my dog smelled like essential oils and wore polka-dotted panties. You just can't make this stuff up.

That about sums up uncomfortable day #3. I have loved hearing from you all who are doing this along with me. Keep your stories coming and feel free to post them in the comments so others can hear! See you back tomorrow!
